Natasha Lyonne’s “Lady Godiva” Hair Transformation Makes Hair Extension Fanatics Go Crazy!

Lady Godiva, in Old English Godgifu, was a late Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who is relatively well documented as the wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and a patron of various churches and monasteries.

Today, she is mainly remembered for a legend dating back to at least the 13th century, in which she rode naked – covered only in her long hair – through the streets of Coventry to gain a remission of the oppressive taxation that her husband, Leofric, imposed on his tenants. The name "Peeping Tom" for a voyeur originates from later versions of this legend, in which a man named Thomas watched her ride and was struck blind or dead.

The look created was mastered by Ted Gibson. Ted Gibson was born in Texas and reared in a military family, so he moved about a lot, living in places like Germany, Hawaii, and Japan. Ted learned to appreciate the beauty of diverse cultures at a young age, and this experience opened up a whole new world for him. Ted returned to Texas and pursued his dream career after returning to the Lone Star State.

All About Ted Gibson

Ted Gibson's extraordinary career as an influencer, independent hairdresser, beautician, and superstar stylist has created some of the most amazing looks of our generation, which is not unexpected given his background.

He's worked with celebrities, actresses, beauty and fashion insiders, and powerful ladies who enjoy having their hair touched by him. Ted was also the resident hairstylist on TLC's "What Not to Wear," where he was in charge of the contestants' life-altering makeovers. Ted Gibson is a highly sought-after hairstylist for editorials, runway, and celebrity clients. His work has been featured in Vogue, just like the one we will be talking about today, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Marie Claire, Vanity Fair, People StyleWatch, W, and Allure, as well as backstage at Chanel, Prada, and Dolce & Gabbana catwalk shows.

He also styles leading American fashion designers including Pamella Roland, Carmen Marc Valvo, and Lela Rose, at both the Fall and Spring New York Fashion Weeks. Ted is well renowned for his work on the hair of A-list celebrities such as Anne Hathaway,  Rachel Brosnahan, Debra Messing, Angelina Jolie, Tessa Thompson, Lupita Nyong'o, Jessica Chastain, Gabrielle Union, and others.

Lady Godiva—Without A horse, On An Imaginary Horse

Natasha Lyonne describes the image that hair stylist Ted Gibson is designing for her as "Lady Godiva—without a horse, on an imaginary horse." Consider Stevie Nicks crossed with Bernadette Peters, as if they "did a bunch of LSD, had a baby, and then fell down the rabbit hole into wherever Alice in Wonderland dwells."

This look only indicates one thing in practice: extensions. "Natasha's hair, in particular, appeals to me because it has a variety of textures, and adding texture is something I enjoy doing. I enjoy giving a lot of loudness, "According to Gibson. To begin, he twists Lyonne's hair to soften her natural curl pattern so that the clip-in hair he's adding to give her extra length and movement blends effortlessly.

Gibson and Lyonne become quick friends after meeting on set with make-up artist Molly R. Stern. "After that day," Lyonne adds, turning to Gibson, "I tried to have Ted come with me everywhere, all the time." "And fortunately, despite being one of the busiest guys in show business, you would say yes."

Thoughts on This Hair Transformation

Lyonne considers her shag-cut red hair, which has been her signature look, most notably in the Netflix thriller Russian Doll. Russian Doll is an American comedy-drama television series that launched on Netflix on February 1, 2019.

It was created by Natasha Lyonne, Leslye Headland, and Amy Poehler. Lyonne is a game developer who dies and relives the same night in a continuing time loop and tries to solve it, which leads her to encounter Alan Zaveri (Charlie Barnett) in a similar scenario. Greta Lee, Yul Vazquez, Elizabeth Ashley, and Chloe Sevigny also star. "In the 1970s, male rock stars always had that shag, sunglasses, and you don't even notice what they look like," she explains. "That's what I enjoy." That rock star effect is likely to be amplified today.

When it comes to hair extensions, Gibson points out that the color match doesn't have to be perfect. "Because if you have hair color or dye your hair, you already know that as it grows out on your head, it gets a little lighter at the ends. It's important to understand that you don't have to have the exact same color—you can play around with it a little to make it your own, "He clarifies. By delicately manipulating hair around the curling iron, Gibson continues to integrate Lyonne's hair with the extensions.

"I make it a point to maintain my frizziness. I don't want it to be curling like that. The texture, frizz...and how it feels and moves, is what makes it so appealing, "he observes. For control and shine, he uses a detangling spray and a texture meringue mousse from his hair-care range.

Does the final Godiva look to achieve the vision the duo had in mind? Recreating the iconic lady Godiva look had been a success, ss Lyonne is quick to quip after a look in the mirror: "Diana Ross would be proud."

Could The Lady Godiva Look Be a New Trend?

Recently for the Met Gala, Kaia Gerber served the Lady Godiva looks. Given the subject of the Met Gala in 2022, lavish beauty notes were expected.

But leave it to Kaia Gerber to set the standard impossibly high – and the lengths even higher – on the evening's red carpet. With a partially-pinned mane of brushed-up curls that evoked Pre-Raphaelite paintings and noblewomen of the past, the model captured the attention of attendees and event fans — and most likely that of her boyfriend and gala date, Austin Butler. Gerber's mahogany ringlets cascaded from a tidy center parting before cascading generously down her back and over her shoulders, thanks to hair expert Guido Palau.

On each side, a pair of diamanté barrettes fastened and embellished the style, with tiny curled tendrils left loose to frame her face. The texture had a softness to it, which was reflected by a peach-colored make-up palette, which was skilfully offset by a strong brow and a draw of black liner. With an Alexander McQueen gown made up of translucent swaths and glittering sequins, the message is clear: Gerber's Gilded Age is now.
