HOW TO FEEL (AND LOOK) YOUR BEST ON CAMERA AT EVERY AGE
We live in the social media age, and in today’s image-obsessed society, it’s pretty hard to avoid the cameras.
These days, people are obsessed with sharing images online, so you never know where you’ll end up - no wonder so many still fear the snap of a camera!
First impressions count, so it’s only natural to worry about looking good in your photograph. Many feel unsure of what to do when a camera is pointed at them.
How do you stand? Where do you look? Smile or no smile? The truth is, most of it is about confidence! Looking good in photographs is mostly about feeling comfortable & there are a number of things you can do to increase your confidence in front of a camera.
Here are our top tips on how to look good in photographs.
1. Wear the right clothes.
We all have that one outfit that instantly makes us feel incredible when we put it on. Where you’re being photographed, wear your favourite clothes - the ones you know look good without a shadow of doubt. You’ll feel endlessly confident & that will shine through in your photos.
If you’re trying to curate a particular “look” for your photos, it’s important to choose colours that complement your skin tone, complexion and hair colour. The camera can be pretty unforgiving, so wearing the wrong colours on camera can age you, leaving you looking drained and lifeless. If you’d like to switch up your colour palette, why not take our Color Quiz & find the perfect hair colour to suit your style?
Many know the colours that work for them already, but if you don’t, it may be worth having your colours chosen by a professional stylist. They’ll help you to curate a style that works for you, not against you. It’s important to also consider whether or not you’ll wear patterns in your photographs. Solid colours often look better than patterns in photos, as patterns can distort your shape & size whilst confusing & distracting the eye. However, if you’re going for something more fun and funky, patterns are a great choice!
2. Get your hair and skin looking flawless!
When you’re taking a photo, it’s important to smooth out any blemishes that may show up on camera. Start by prepping your skin. To prepare your skin, begin by cleansing with a gentle, non-irritating exfoliant. Don’t use rough or scratchy scrubs that may damage your skin or leave it red and irritated. When you’re done cleansing, moisturise with a shine-controlling moisturiser to give yourself that fresh-faced look without the oiliness or shininess.
For your hair, make sure it’s styled well in a way that makes you feel confident. You must try JuvaBun Messy Bun!It is simple and easy to use and will give you qiock updo.
3. Good lighting is important
It’s not necessary to have a professional lighting set up in order to take your best photos or videos; you can work with what you’ve got! The best lighting is natural lighting. On a sunny day, face a natural light source such as an open window - it will light up your face and give you the perfect glow. Try to avoid any light sources in the background - whether that’s an open window or a lamp as they’ll cast unflattering shadows over your face.
On cloudier days, or at night time, try placing a warm lamp in front of you to get that cosy glow. Avoid harsh overhead lights as they’ll cast unflattering shadows and age you.
If you’re outside, how you take your pictures will be dependent on the weather. In sunny or bright weather, be sure to turn away from the sun so that you’re not squinting, and angle your head and camera in a way that blocks the sun. On an overcast day, the light from the sun will be more diffused, so your pictures will turn out great!
4. Know your angles.
Knowing your angles can be the difference between your best picture and your worst! For instance, pictures taken from a higher angle can accentuate your features and make you look better, while photos taken from below can be extremely unflattering. Before taking a picture, straighten your spine, lift your chin up & stretch your neck out slightly. Then bring the camera in so your head and shoulders fill the frame. Make sure to look directly at the lens when you take the photo, instead of at your own image.
5. Be prepared to take lots of photos.
Professional photographers will take hundreds of photos in one session to get that money shot. Don’t be afraid to take dozens of photos to get one that you’re truly happy with. If you have an iPhone, you can set your camera to “burst mode” to get lots of pictures in one go. Have fun with it! Try out a bunch of different poses, angles, lighting and expressions. Experimentation is key when it comes to finding out what sort of pictures you like best.
6. Be confident!
Perhaps the most important tip of them all, is to be confident. No matter how good you look in your photos, you’ll never feel like you look good if you’re lacking in self-confidence. It’s important to constantly positively affirm yourself. You know you look good! That’s why you want to take a picture.
Don’t let a few bad shots destroy your confidence; have fun with it and take it in your stride as part of the process. When you’re in front of the camera, try to relax. Don’t feel like you need to pose too much - just be yourself!
Once you get comfortable with having a camera in front of you & you stop focusing so much on how you look, your natural beauty will shine through.
