HOW TO FEEL (AND LOOK) YOUR BEST ON CAMERA AT EVERY AGE
Now that nearly everyone has a smartphone in their pocket, we’re on camera more than ever.
One study estimated that camera phone users take an average of 150 pictures per month. We’re also using video communication more and more.
That’s why feeling comfortable and confident in front of the camera is more important than ever.
Whether you’re being photographed at a wedding, taking a selfie for Instagram or Facebook or appearing on a video call, there are a few things you can do to ensure you always look your best.
Read on for our six tips for taking gorgeous photos and videos.
1. Prep your skin.
When you’re taking a photo or video, any dead skin cells on your face won’t reflect light. That makes your complexion appear dull.
To prepare your skin, begin by cleansing with a gentle, non-irritating exfoliant. Don’t use rough or scratchy scrubs that may damage your skin or leave it red and irritated.
We suggest BOOM SCRUB™ for a deep-pore cleanse. Boom Scrub gently exfoliates your skin to remove any dull, lifeless cells while cleaning your pores at the same time.
After cleansing, moisturize your skin with a shine-control moisturizer like BOOM COTTON® to appear fresh without looking oily or shiny.
2. Pick the best lighting.
You don’t need professional lighting to take your best photos or videos.
For indoor daytime photos or video, face a bright, natural light source like an open window. Avoid bright lights or windows directly behind you, as they may cast you into shadow.
For cloudier days, at night or in darker rooms, place one or two bright, warm lights directly in front of you. Avoid harsh overhead lights as they tend to add unflattering shadows.
For bright outside shots, turn away from the sun so you’re not squinting and angle your phone or camera so your head blocks the sun.
Overcast days are great for photos outside because the light is more diffused. You won’t have to worry about squinting or shadows!
3. Experiment with different angles and distances.
Changing the angle of photos or videos can dramatically improve your results.
Try taking selfies at different angles. Photos taken above eye level and to the side tend to be more flattering than photos taken from below.
Straighten your spine. Lift your chin. Stretch your neck out slightly. Then bring the camera in so your head and shoulders fill the frame. Look directly at the lens (not your image) when you take the photo.
For videos, try propping your laptop or webcam up on books or a stand so the camera lens is just above your eyeline. Then slide the camera forward or back until you more or less fill the frame.
4. Choose the right background.
When preparing for a professional video call, your background matters.
Too much clutter can be distracting for viewers. Before your call begins, take a critical look at what’s visible behind you and remove any extra items that may be distracting.
If you’ll be on video often, you may find it easier to create your own “set.” Arrange a table or desk with your camera or laptop at the correct height, with proper lighting behind the camera and a minimally decorated area (like a wall or bookcase) behind you.
Once you’re done, it will be easy to pop onto any video call looking gorgeous, calm and collected.
5. Take lots of photos.
Professional photographers take hundreds of photos in a session but only publish a few of those shots. So don’t be afraid to hit the shutter button 10 or 15 times to get one or two photos you’re happy with.
Try out different poses, angles, lighting and expressions. Many mobile cameras also include filters that allow you to play with lighting or color. Have fun with it and experiment to get great results.
6. Feel good to look good.
When she became a silver-haired model, our Boom founder, Cindy Joseph, discovered that the most photogenic people don’t try to look a certain way—they are just themselves in front of the camera.
When you’re taking a photo or video, try to relax. Don’t try to pose your face or body too much. Just be yourself. Focus on the person behind the camera or think about someone or something that makes you smile.
Taking good photos and videos may require a bit of practice, but it doesn’t have to be difficult. With time, you may learn to love having frequent photographic evidence of your life and beauty.
Cindy Joseph encouraged women all around the world to embrace their natural beauty in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond.
Cindy created an entire skin care and makeup line to highlight what already makes you beautiful—YOU. Read on to hear more of Cindy’s story. Or click below to see our entire line of makeup and skin care.
Is there a woman who hasn’t dabbed a little lipstick on her cheeks for a quick touch-up?
The whole idea behind BOOM! is less is more. Women shouldn’t have to use dozens of different makeup products—especially in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond.
You should be able to simplify your makeup routine, paring down to just a few items that bring out your best. That's why our late founder, Cindy Joseph, originally created Boomsticks. These three compact, creamy cosmetic sticks were designed to simplify, replacing many of those products in your makeup bag.
BOOM! is the sound of a revolution in cosmetics. While other skincare and makeup companies carry “anti-aging” products, BOOM! is the only company that is “PRO-AGE.” And we are not the only ones who think age is beautiful.
Available on our website, Boom cosmetic sticks are compact, travel-ready tubes that fit in the palm of your hand:
Boomstick Color—sheer berry color for cheeks, lips, forehead, neck and décolleté; Boomstick Glimmer—sheer, pearlescent highlighter for eyelids, inner corners of the eyes, cheekbones, lips, cupid’s bow, neck, shoulders, collarbones and décolleté; Boomstick Glo—olive oil and beeswax moisturizer for lips, cuticles, around the eyes and anywhere else you'd like to add clean, natural hydration.
Our late founder, Cindy Joseph, spent 27 years as a makeup artist. With her unique insight into bringing out women's beauty (at EVERY age), she created our original Boom cosmetics and skincare line. "As women age, looking fresh rather than made up is the key," Cindy said.
“The biggest makeup mistake that middle-aged women make is putting on too much under-eye concealer,” Cindy said. “At home, it might look okay, but in the daylight, it just looks like a bunch of gunk under your eyes. The older you get, the less makeup you should wear. It’s not a blank canvas anymore.”
Long before Cindy founded BOOM!, she had two very successful careers—first as a makeup artist, and then as a silver-haired supermodel.
Cindy began her career as a makeup artist in late-1970s San Francisco. Working for Macy's, Esprit and others, she pioneered the "natural look" with her models—which later became the inspiration for Boom cosmetics.
Soon after Cindy let her silver hair grow in, she was spotted on a New York sidewalk by fashion photographer Steven Meisel's scout. At 49, she began her second career as a silver-haired supermodel. During the next two decades, she was featured in ads for Dolce & Gabbana, DKNY, Olay, Nivea, L.L. Bean, Target and more.
Having spent nearly three decades as a makeup artist and another two as a supermodel, Cindy decided—in her early 60s—to go into the cosmetics business herself. She wanted to design a line of cosmetics that was all about revealing, embracing and celebrating women's natural beauty at every age. We are proud to say that she succeeded...and BOOM! was born. Today, Boomstick Trio is still our customer favorite, creating the dewy natural look ideal for all skin types and tones at all ages.
Cindy's legacy lives on in all of us here at BOOM!, as well as hundreds of thousands of women worldwide who resonate with her pro-age philosophy.

What women are saying about us...
“By far this is the best ‘make-up’ for women over 40. I feel the need to brighten up just a little. Time is showing on my face, which is beautiful, but a splash of Boom is the perfect accompaniment of a wonderful life.” — Susan
